Lincoln/Mercury Repair: Heat blows out of the back vents, but not the front of my 2000 Lincoln Navigator, lincoln navigator, gas mileage

Question
I've tried all kinds of different settings to get the heat to come out. I've used the auto function set at anywhere from 80-90 degrees. (mainly 90) I've tried using the manual settings directed to the vents, floor, defrost, panels... nomatter where I direct the heat or whether it's set on auto or I do it manual, the air still doesn't blow out hot. Like I said before when I turn on the 2nd and 3rd row heat using the rear panel controls, they blow out hot air, but the front vents still blow out cool air. I was wondering is there a valve or something that's not opening to allow hot air to blow out the front or some kind of electrical problem? I've seen through a web search that others have had this problem as well, but I haven't seen any solutions.

-----Question-----
Hey,

I have a 2000 Lincoln Navigator and the heat blows out of the rear vents, but not out of the front vents. Also sometimes when I try to start the engine it just makes a ticking sound, but when I disconnet and reconnect the positive battery cable, it starts right up! Can you help! Any suggestions?

Hi Darren,

The only problems I have ever had with my Navies were the charging system. I had to replace the alternator and battery in both of them. I suggest you guys do the same. After I replaced the alternator in my 2000 I even got a few miles better gas mileage.

As for the heating part, I need a little more info. Are you using the auto setting to warm the inside of the car? Are you directing the controller to panel? Is the temp set on 90? Tell me a little more about how we are trying to get heat. There is a baffle in the front heating system so that hot air doesn't blow directly on you when on the auto setting.

Answer
Hi Darren,

Believe me, I had to ask. There is a blend door actuator that is possibly not working. It is separate from the rear heat system. Here's what I have on that:

The A/C electric blend door actuator is located on the plenum assembly.

Its function is to move the air temperature blend door on command from the control assembly.
The A/C electric blend door actuator contains a reversible electric motor and a potentiometer. The potentiometer wiper is connected to the actuator output shaft and moves with the output shaft to indicate the position of the air temperature blend door.
A 5 volt signal is applied to the ends of the potentiometer. The voltage available at the wiper indicates the position of the potentiometer. The expressed value of the actuator wiper voltage is sent to the EATC module and is compared to the desired wiper voltage determined by the EATC module. The control module then drives the actuator motor in whichever direction is necessary to make the actuator wiper voltage agree with the desired wiper voltage.

The wiper they refer to is door itself.

Here is the info I have for replacement.

REMOVAL

Remove the rear floor duct.
Remove the floor duct.

Remove the electronic actuator.
1 Disconnect the connector.
2 Remove the screws.
3 Pull down to release the actuator shaft and remove the electronic actuator.

INSTALLATION

To install, reverse the removal procedure.

The plenum assembly is located under the dash on the passenger side. The blend door actuator is a square flat guy held in with 3 bolts into the plastic plenum housing.
