I own a 1988 Mercury Grand Marquis that will only upshift from 1st to 2nd and no further. Can you help?

Sorry to say, it's that time. There are no electronics keeping it from shifting, if the governor was hung you would only have first, modualator controls vacuum and if it was bad would only allow you to shift manually but you would have all 4 gears and reverse. Other than that, you will need to overhaul it. Cottman gives a great warranty and are very competitive price wise. There is a very slight chance that it's a dirty governor, but if the governor is dirty, that means your transmission is coming apart. Sorry Floyd.
