Lincoln/Mercury Repair: Mercury Cougar Check Engine Light, 2000 mercury cougar, mercury cougar

Question
I have a 2000 Mercury Cougar that runs great, but recently the Check Engine light has come on and stayed on, despite making sure the gas cap is screwed on correctly, and after adding premium gas to the tank.  Can you help?

Thanks.
Rebecca

Answer
Hi Rebecca,

The check engine light is a warning system that is connected to dozens and dozens of things. Although the car feels fine, this is an early warning that something needs attention. I strongly suggest you take it to a repair facility that can scan your computer for DTCs. Diagnostic Trouble Codes will be stored in the car's onboard computer. The code number will tell us what needs repairing. Cottman Transmission will scan your car for free. www.cottman.com  This will likely be a sensor. Please have it looked at right away so the problem doesn't turn into something serious. Hope this helps!
