Question -
transmission had no reverse but had drive but now has reverse but no drive

Answer -
Hi Michelle!

Wow, what an issue! Ok, I need just a little more info. When you had no reverse did you do anything to try to fix it? Did no reverse swap at the exact same time as no forward? Do you have a check engine light on? And this last thing, could you please start your car, set the emergency brake, put it in neutral, raise the hood and check the transmission fluid. Take a white paper towel with you. Wipe the end of the dipstick on it and tell me what you see. Please discribe if you see brown colored fluid, any particles, also smell the fluid and tell me if it has a burnt oder. Please do this even if you just changed your fluid. Fluid tells a story and your my eyes and nose here! Please resubmit with all this info so I can help you avoid getting ripped off by some trany con artist. If I was to drive a car I would drive the Grand Marquis. I love those cars, like driving your living room sofa!

Yes reverse came back when drive went out. fluid is fine. Drained transmission removed pan thought there was no fluid left. removed filter about a quart of fluid went everywhere immediately. could filter be stopped up causing the problem.

Hi Michelle,

I could I imagine, I mean the filter is there to stop junk from moving into your internal workings of the transmission. Though that bunch that came out is on the other side of the filter. I haven't seen a clogged filter in many years. When filters get clogged they usually make a pretty loud screaming noise. That transmission holds about 11 quarts and when you removed the pan 4 quarts should have been in there. So if you were that low, that would be the cause. Problem with running a transmission low on fluid is it causes a lot of heat inside the transmission, a transmissions #1 enemy. There is no magical fluid to put back in, refill it with mercon 3. And try it out. Hopefully, you didn't cause any internal damage. One last thing, if your low, your leaking. Transmissions don't use fluid, it's a sealed unit. You'll need to keep an eye on it for leaks and have it repaired. I suggest Cottman Transmission if there is one near you. Hope this helps.

Fluid level was fine. I drained about 4 or 5 quarts out altogether. Which transmission sylenoid controls this problem. checked it with the pan off one sylenoid got hot. Fluid had no metal in it to speak of . I really appreciate the help.

Answer
Hi again,

This is why I asked before if your check engine light was on. This would indicate a possible electrical problem. You will overheat a solenoid if it is not in fluid trying to test it for too long. There are a number of solenoids in the valve body. I suggest you put it all back together and have it scanned for codes. Cottman's will do this for free. Once you have the codes let me know what they are.
