Lincoln/Mercury Repair: Message re: transmission, reverse gears, continental cars

Question
I have a 2000 Lincoln Continental. The "check transmission" light is coming up on the message center. I have taken it to be check but they have found nothing wrong with it. Do you have any suggestions?

Answer
Hey Jerry,

AX4N Transmissions have had a huge amount of problems over the years. Stemming from the AXOD originally used in Taurus/Sable/Continental cars and wagon since 1986. Converted to the AXOD-E in 1991 and split in 1996 to AX4S and AX4N. The "N" version stayed in the T/S/C configs, but the "S" version went on to the Windstars. Sorry, I love this stuff. Ok, so on to your problem. In order for the check transmission light to come on, the computer must see a problem. Then it triggers a DTC that is stored in the computer. That light will not come on unless there is a DTC (DTC=Diagnostic Trouble Code) stored. If you took it to an independent transmission shop they may not have the upgraded software (it's very expensive)in their scan tool to see the code or codes. If you took it to the dealer they should have seen something. I suggest you take it to a Cottman Transmission shop. They will scan it for free. Re-submit to me the codes, if they find any, and I will tell you what they mean. Also, keep an eye on vehicle operation. When that light comes on it will usually throw it self into "Home Safe". This as a way for the transmission to protect it self by giving you just 2nd and reverse gears so you can get it home or to a garage without causing further damage. If your speedometer starts acting up this also is in relation. There's more, but have it scanned first please. Hope this helps!
