Lincoln/Mercury Repair: timming belt, mercury tracer, 1989 mercury tracer

hello
i have a 1989 mercury tracer with a 1.6l fuel injection car . i resantly had my thermastat go out in witch the car got so hot cuz i couldnt see my gauges at night time .that i didn't no the car temp was hot so it blew out my water pump seal & was leaking from the water pump when i looked at it .luckly i went to pick-n-pull and found a brand new engine with a pretty new water pump on it .i replaced the water pump but to get the pump out i had to take off the  timming tentstioner pulley  and now i can't get the belt back on with the pulley& the spring on .i also think the timmings off & im not sure how to even time it someone said u have to take out the #1 spark plug and put your finger over the hole while they tap the key till it blows ure finger off the hole but am i suopost to have the belt on or off to do that? do i do it before i put the belt on ?& how do i get the timming belt on?

time it like they said leave belt off do not put your finger in the hole . use a thin screw driver you will breake your finger . plus u want to use no1 plug this swill be top dead center then face the dis rotor toward no. plug put the plug back in and then start it turn the dis on till smooths out . good luck to u hun do not put your finger in hole . also u have a pretty name and let me know how you make out pete
