Lincoln/Mercury Repair: 88 Mercury Marquis starting, mercury marquis, swith

Question
When i try to start the car all of the electrical shuts down.  Tried new battery and still the same.  Seems to "reset" after a couple of minutes...at least the interior lights come back...until the swith is turned.  Before replacing the battery I jumped it and had the motor try to turn.  The car is a 1988 Marquis with a 302 engine.

Answer
by the sounds of it it may be the starter. if theres a dead short in the starter it will overload all the breakers. disconnect the wire going from the solenoid to the starter. try to start the car. if theres no loss of power replace the starter. if there is a loss of power than try the solenoid.
before i forget: make sure a spot on the wire from the solenoid to the starter hasnt rubbed to the frame. if the wire is grounded that will do the same thing. let me know how it goes.
