Mazda Repair: PROTEGE5 NOT STARTING, protege5, jurgen

Question
Hi Joshua I wonder if you could point us in the right direction. I an trying to help my son in law to get his 2003 Protege5 (standard engine & automatic)started and we have no luck. The car has more than 100,000 miles on it.
When we turn the key, there is nothing happening, no gauges etc. No horn no brake lights However the headlights work!
We checked and charged the battery, jump started and nothing. Checked all fuses and they appear  OK.
After we cleaned the battery posts/connectors it started up once but that is it.
Any advice would be appreciated. Jurgen

Answer
are the terminals clean?
are the terminals intact (not loose in the batter housing)
also check the main ground wire for fraying or brakage from the battery to the engine and to the body.
if the battery is got that is it's holding a charge then the most likely cause is a wiring issue

most parts suppliers will test the battery for free
