Mazda Repair: Engine running hot, radiator coolant, temperature gauge

Question
It's me again.  1990 Miata 5 speed.  My entire engine seem to run very hot.  I have synthetic oil and flushed coolant yet still very hot.  Is this normal?  What can I do to keep it little cooler?

Answer
When you say hot, does the temperature gauge go beyond the mid point.  If so do not run the engine you will damage it.

The engine with proper cooling will run 190 to 205 degrees depending upon ambient, ideally the lesser.  The engine bay can see upwards of 350-500 degrees depending upon which side of the motor your checking.  If your feeling it more inside than you'd like it could be a shifter body seal letting in heat or a lack of jute padding in the tunnel area.  You'll have to be more specific.

As for getting it cool, a good unobstructed air flow and radiator coolant flow with two good working fans and a proper 50/50 coolant mix should keep your Miata right where it needs to be.  Beyond that things like exhaust obstruction or incorrect ignition timing can lead to excessive heat buildup.  Further investigation is required to see if either exist.
