Mazda Repair: 99miata fuel problem, line connectors, pressure regulator

i have a 99 miata w/1.8 engine. i will be driving down the road and it will just die, and won,t start. if i squirt gas in the intake it starts then dies. if i leave it set overnight it will start up and drive for 15 to 20 minutes then does the same thing again. is this a filter problem?

A filter can cause a problem though they are fairly large by design so the likelihood of it being just a filter is slim.  Many 99+ models have experienced pressure regulator issues (fairly common), it is mounted in the tank and must maintain pressure in the lines to the engine for it to start and run.  

Make certain the pump relay is heard engaging to rule out an electrical concern (very rare).  You can either remove and replace the fuel injection fuse or place a test jumper to the GND-F/P contacts in the diagnostics junction.

Since the assembly has to be removed it is advisable to consider replacing the pump also.  The assembly can be purchased new from Mazda or in pieces as needed.  FYI; don't drop any screws into the access area and be cautious of pressurized fuel when disconnecting the line connectors.
