Mazda Repair: passenger air bag off switch, static electricity, safety restraint

Question
The 1996 Miata has a passenger side air bag but no turn off switch to protect small passengers.  Can a switch be added or is there any way to temporarily disable the air bag on the passenger side.

Answer
Unfortunately the SRS (safety restraint system) systems from 94-97 did not come equipped with a switch to turn off the passengers airbag.  Due to the design of the system a switch cannot be added.  If the passenger air bag is disconnected the SRS MIL (malfunction indicator lamp) will flash that a fault exists.  I know of no company or individual that has marketed a switch for this purpose.

I have had customers disconnect the passenger side module themselves for this same reason, however a shop cannot do this for you due to legal issues.  If you attempt it yourself disconnect the battery during the process and be sure to ground yourself to the car with a grounding strap to avoid static electricity.  Wrap and disconnected lines and connectors with electrical tape and secure them snug.

The passenger module connections are bright blue and orange and are located behind the glove box door.
