Mazda Repair: location of 1992 Miata fuel pump, phillips head screws, phillips driver

Question
Is the fuel pump on the 1992 Miata, 1.6, standard trannie in the fuel tank?  Or can I get to it without removing the tank?  TIA

Answer
Its in the tank.  Behind the seat under the rear deck carpet is a odd shaped access cover remove it and you'll see the oval top to the pump assembly.  Unplug the lines and the wires, remove the small phillips head screws (don't drop any they will go into never ever land if you do).  Lift the assembly out take car of the gasket.  The pump and the sending unit come out as an assembly don't snag or damage the sending unit.  Take care to catch any spilled gas.

The pump can be removed and replaced with a new one for about $175 or you can buy the whole assembly from Mazda for around $375 if your is corroded.  Reverse to install.

Notes: careful with the wire connections and that screw that holds the pump to the assembly can be a bitch so take your time and use the right size phillips driver.

Happy Miataing!
