Mazda Repair: Overdrive on 2002 Mazda Protege DX, mazda protege, drivability

Question
When I press the overdrive button on my Protege, nothing happens, no light turns on, and nothing feels different. How do I know if it is out? If it is, how much would it cost to fix?

Answer
The button engages the "Overdrive Off" or "Hold" feature which keeps the vehicle from up shifting to 4th gear or overdrive.  This is only useful in heavy stop and go driving or pulling of a trailer or uphill situations.   I would assume a switch or connection to be at fault.  Once you shut the car off and restart it it will always default to "Overdrive On" so no normal drivability issues should exist.
