Mazda Repair: Driver side door, interior door panel, latch assembly

Question
2002 MAZDA 626 ES/LX 6 cylinder
Last week my fiance opened driver's door to get in and a screw hit the ground and after closing door it will not open....by comparing the screw to passenger door, I can tell that it is one of the 3 screws that secure the latch assembly on door...problem: how can I get the door open to work on it? The interior door panel screws (plastic) can only be accessed with door open. Any ideas? Thks

Answer
If a latch screw is out you can assume more than one may also be loose or missing.  The latch is not sitting in it's normal fixed place so the actuator rods inside the door are not able to pull the latch mechanism.  Your only hope is to get between the glass and the door skin and fish directly at the latch release.  A good door kit lock is required.  The other option is a Pop-A-Lock service but, explain your situation before you have them come out.  Lastly, most paint/body shops are familiar with stuck latches on wrecked cars so a body man would be another possible option.
