Mazda Repair: not sure what the problem is, 2000 mazda 626, transmission expert

Question
I was parking my 2000 Mazda 626 today, but when i shifted it into park i heard a noise. Then when i took my foot off the breaks, i started rolling backward. I had to use my emergency break. Now when i try to start my car, the radio and check engine light come on but the car wont start. Any ideas?

Answer
It sounds like your car isn't actually "in park". Try starting the car while in neutral or reverse, or even drive. It is possible that one of the cables that actuates the transmission has broken or come undone. I'm not much of a transmission expert, so I can't be too much more helpful than that. If you get it started and hear any nasty noises coming from under the car, shit it down and take it to a shop.
