Mazda Repair: manual transmission, clutch master cylinder, clutch pedal

Question
On my 1996 manual 5 speed transmission, the clutch fully engages when the pedal is let out only about 1 1/2 inch.  It works, and doesn't slip, but it should come out farther before being fully engaged. I would expect a stretched cable to come out all the way, or even to slip when out all the way.  But this is the opposite, like it was too tight.  What could be wrong?  Thanks.

Answer
You probably have a bad slave cylinder. Check the slave cylinder for leakage. If it is leaking, then it needs to be replaced. It is also possible that the clutch master cylinder is leaking. Also, check your fluid level. If it is exceptionally low, then you will not get good feel from the clutch pedal. I guess you could have a bad hose or leaky connection too, but it's usually a bad slave cylinder.
