Mazda Repair: 4x4 on Mazda B4000 wont work, mazda b4000, electric shift

Question
i bought my mazda b400 back in january of this year. it runs great for a 1994 and with 222,000+ miles. i took it off roading recently unknowing that the 4x4 package will not engage. It is an electric shift on the dash and im not sure when it is on and the light in the dash is not working, or since it doesnt seem to be on the electric shift is not intact(even with intact fuses). What else could it be? any suggestions on how to fix it?
thanks, jeremy.

Answer
First, I regret that I am not a four-wheel-drive expert. Also, this truck is actually manufactured by Ford which makes me even less familiar with it. However, I can still offer some advice.

The components that I would check are: The fuses, which I know you have already checked, the switch itself, the light that comes on when the 4wd system in engaged, the solenoid that actuates the mechanism within the front axle, and the wiring associated with the system.

I know that you have already checked the fuses, but it is very common for the break in the fuse to not be visible. If you have only done a visual inspection, then a test with a test light is in order. Do this before checking any other components. If you have already done this, then disregard this step.

Next, check the switch with a test light. It should be a simple on/off affair. Again, I am not a Ford expert, but in most cases, it is possible to pull the switch out through the front of the dash.

The light that comes on when the system is engaged should also be tested. If it is part of the switch, then it should be tested while the switch is removed.

Another thing to test while the switch is removed is whether or not the switch is being supplied with current. Again, use a test light.

If all other components of the system are in working order, then there should be voltage at the solenoid. unplug the electrical connector at the solenoid and, using a test light, make sure that voltage is turned on and off with the switch in the on and off positions.

Test the solenoid to make sure that the solenoid works. If it is a simple solenoid with only one or two wires, then it is possible it is possible to test it with out a manual. If there are more wires, thin you should get a manual before attempting this test. Simply put, you are making sure that the solenoid moves when voltage is supplied.
