Mazda Repair: 1998 Mazda Protege stalling now after new battery, mazda protege, battery check

Question
I just replaced the battery in my protege because of the cold weather it wasnt starting at all. I changed it myself by disconnecting the negative terminal first as recommended to me. When driving it stalls or wants to stall at a slow or stop in gear. Im now thinking the idle computer was erased or maybe too much "terminal protector"(vaseline?)was applied- (the auto parts guy sold to me).
please help

Answer
first thing i would check is the alternator,  is it putting out more than 13v?  is the check engine light on? was it running ok with the old battery before it went bad? check and make sure nothing got disconnected while replacing battery, check air tube for splits, also pull off vacume line to fuel regulator and see if theres any gas in the line,if there is it's bad. facing the engine the regulator is on the left it's connected to the fuel rail. most likly one of those 3 things
