Mazda Repair: replace panel lights, napa auto parts, gauge cluster

Question
We have a 1999 Mazda 626.

It seems all the dash panel lights behind the qauges, the speedometer, fuel gauge, etc., are burnt out.

Is this something that I could do myself or do I need a mechanic or the dealer to do this?

Answer
You can get a repair manual from a local auto parts store and follow the section on gauge cluster removal. You can purchase the replacement lamps from a local NAPA auto parts without hassle and following the book install them. However, I will warn you that even after you have done this they might not work. You may need a part called a Rheostat, which is the little knob that controls the brightness of the instrument lights. It is common that if all the lights have gone out that wiggling and thumping on the Rheostat knob will cause lights flash or blink on. Try that before replacing anything. A Rheostat is not a big item to replace and all these repairs can be performed by you with the repair manual.
