Mazda Repair: No Spark, haynes book, mazda engine

Question
Hi John; I have a 1990 Mazda MVP V6 I have Check the Coil, Coil Wire, Pick up coil/ignighter All are good acording to my haynes book. Do you think it could be the CPU located above the fuse block under the dash?
I'm Stumped

Answer
I can tell you this much about the venerable Mazda electronics from the 89-94 model vehicles.

CRAP!

Well, do not trust the Haynes book on resistance values because it still could be any of those things that you have checked save the ignition wires which are pretty straight forward.

I would suggest that you take off the cap and crank the engine to make sure the rotor turns as one of the fist things to go on a V6 Mazda engine is the timing belt and without a timing belt the distributor does not turn.

Second, I would use a noid light "available from an auto parts store" to check the injectors to make sure they are firing as the ECM will not fire injectors when it has failed. Only sometimes will the failure cause the ignition system not to work. Once the fuel and ECM are verified you are left with the coil, igniter, and the Distributor.

When I replace them "7 2600i trucks and 5 MPV's in the last 2 years" I replace everything to the tune of $600 in parts alone "my cost" and they run like a top afterwards.

A good indication of the distributor is if you noticed the MPV started hard in the rain and or skipped and hesitated when it was moist out.

Regards,

John
