Mazda Repair: Mazda MX5 (Miata) auto-box, mazda mx5 miata, japanese import cars

Question
Hello, I cannot select any gear on my 1990 Mazda mx5 automatic. When I switch on ignition no service lights come on & the rev counter doesn't work, the turn signal indicators don't work, but the hazzard light switch does.  It does start & idle normally & the brake lights work. I press on the brakes & try to select gear but it remains locked in 'P'.My local mazda dealer has suggested the 'inhibitor switch'. If you think it could be this can you tell me where & how to locate it, or perhaps you think it could be something else. I live in the UK & my MX5 auto is a Jap. import so mazda dealers wont touch it or or want copious amounts of cash just to breathe on it. If you could help I would be grateful.
Thanks Neal.

Answer
You are lucky to have such a fine automobile. However, your dealership friends are nitwits as it is no different in concept or design from the US import or UK import counterparts. I have been using Japanese import cars and porting parts into US bodies for years.

The inhibitor switch is used to deactivate the cars driveline and prevent theft.

However, I do believe that you are in need of a regular automotive shop that is not afraid of being challenged.
Do not tell them it is a Jap import. Just tell them that it is acting up.

I believe it will come back as a faulty ECM which will be
easy to get as the Japanese spare parts companies are more than happy to help where the wuss's at the dealerships will not for 1/4 of the price.

If no one else will help you I suggest that you take it to an import tuner shop. This is where you find the kids that are the most qualified at working on imported cars and are quite proficient at fixing anything that comes down the road.

Enjoy your car and happy motoring,

Regards,

John
