Mazda Repair: Air conditioning - chirping noise, mazda protege, luck chris

We just puchased a 2003 Mazda Protege and noticed a chirping noise when the air conditioning is on as the car is coming to a stop or when accelerating after a stop.  It goes away after the car gains speed and it occurs intermittently - maybe half the time.  What could this be, and how do I fix it?  I sounds like it could be a belt, but I'm not sure.

Hi Mike thanks for asking,
This must be one of two things, it is either the accesory drive belt is worn out or not adjusted properly or the AC comressor is starting to go, check the belt first and if you are sure that is not the problem narrow it down to the compressor,
