Mazda Repair: 1999 mazda 626 noise and check engine light, remote control car, emmisions control

Question
Hi Chris,
I have a 1999 mazda lx 626, and it has a little over 79,000 miles on it.Recently it has been making a squealin noise when i drive off, but only when i drive off. yesterday  i was drivin along and the check engine light came on. i went to crank the car today, and the light is still on but this time when i cranked it up I started to smell fuel very strongly, and the car is making a weird sound when i accelerate, the best way it can be described is that it sounds like a remote control car.I haven't touched the car since im out of town and there is no mazda dealer here, what do you suggest.By the way, about a week ago i took the car to get an oil change, the fluids were topped and no further service was suggested. Your help in this matter wouldbegreatly appreciated.

Answer
HGi Will thanks for asking,
Thats odd, maby the service guyy spilt something on the accesory drive belt, that could be the possible cause of the squeeling noise, And with the check engine light, that only comes on ususaly when the is an emmisions control failure, if you are smeeling fuel then it will probably be a problem with the evaporative emmisions control sytem, this system is supposed to take care of all the fuel vapours that you are probably smelling, I would take this to a local shop to have scanned and to check to make sure the purge canister is not filled with fuel, the most common reason for this problem is overfilling your fuel tank, the first time the pupm stops that is when you should stop pupming,
good luck
