Mazda Repair: engine crank no start, luck chris, mark thanks

i am a mechanic but am having a probleme with my 2002 protege 5. when i start it sometimes it starts but other times it cranks but doesnt start and it sounds as if the engine is no longer timed right. another garage thinks that it could be the fuel pump but i have doubts.

This is only a suggestion, but check the shutter valves inside the intake manifold, i have seen a few where the srews for the flaps have fallen out and they sit inside the intake manifold. If this is not it get back to me
