Mazda Repair: 2.5 6 cyl mazda engine in a 94 Probe, ford probe gt, mazda engine

Question
I have a 94 Ford Probe GT with a 2.5 liter 6 cyl. Mazda engine. I just had the plugs and plug wires replaced, and now it idles and revs like it should in park, but when you put it in drive it will idle, but it will not accelerate. Also the check engine light is now on. What could cause this? Could they have accidentally knocked something loose while changing the plug wires? The mechanic that changed the plugs could not figure out what happened. We took it to another shop, but it will be Thursday before they can even look at it.

Thanks for any ideas you may have that would cause this to happen.

Answer
Hi and thanks for writing,
I had the same problem with this car when it was brought to me a few months ago. It turned out to be the inhibitor switch in the transmittion. It could be the same for your car too. It may be faulty or the connection may be loose. I'm not saying this is the problem but it is likely. There are any number of other possibilities. Just one bad sensor in the fuel injection system can cause all sorts of problems like this. It has to be hooked up to a diagnostics computer to pinpoint the exact problem.
hope this helps
