Question
1992 mecedes benz s500
166000 miles
new zealand
have been told that i have to replace the oil sensor in the 1992 s500 that i am thinking of buying

what does the oil sensor do?

what is involved in changing it eg is it on the out side of the motor or is it internal and the motor has to come out to fix it?

can it be driven for a little while with a faulty oil sensor and not do any damage to the motor?

Answer
Are you asking about the Oil Level Sender?
As I recall, you can DIY, remove the lower oil pan and replace this unit in one hour.
I can not recall what the computer does with this signal, it may lock you in limp mode to protect the engine.
