I have been trying to solve the problem of extremely rough idle and excessive smoking on a 1984 300 SD Benz.  I have replaced all the injectors and by pass hoses, still rough/smoking problem.  Smoothes out at higher rpm but still smokes.  I noticed a small leak around the injector insert (threaded part in the block that holds the injector)between the block and this threaded insert.  Can I fix this by removing and using some thread sealant?  What does it take to remove the insert, special tool?  Thanks.

Did you install new heat shield/crush washers on each new injector?

Yes, and I made sure to get the right side up.  Except I did drop one and cuoldn't find it so I reused an old one.  Not on the cyl. that is leaking.

The following links should help.
Especially the last massive one, which is a fifteen year old young man, first car, and major smoke = five acre smoke cloud in moments, every possible issue is covered in depth, at some point.

Answer
Thread sealer can NOT be used.
Never reuse heat shield/crush washers.
The leaking injector may have a flawed or flipped over heat shield/crush washer.
Remove the leaking injector, install another new heat shield/crush washer, and be sure to torque the injector to 70-80 N-m (which is 51-60 foot pound).
