Mercedes Benz repair: 1994 bmw, bmw 525i, 1994 bmw 525i

Question
hello there,
i am buying 1994 bmw 525i
the seller said he has replaced the engine and since he did so the transmission had lost the momorey of its 2 last gears.
does that make any logic? and is it an expensive job to get fixed?he said it drives fine.
what is your advice?

Answer
Yes, this can happen.
Cost of repair, unknown, depends upon what is wrong, and if the part is available..
There have been several 525i limp into my repair bay like you describe, someone thought they could treat a BMW like a Chevy RE: swapping engines, each car is programed different.
If I recall correctly, there are three computers on this model that talk to each other.
What you describe could be limp mode, a simple code reset might fix it.
One or more of the computers may be damaged = replace it and reprogram all three, cost unknown = depends upon parts availability and local labor rate.
With an engine swap, it is possible that any sensors, wires or the transmission was damaged, cost unknown = depends upon parts availability and local labor rate.
The generic scan tool for this car is roughly $2,300.00 USD, a must have to read and clear codes.

I suggest you RUN away from this car.
