Mercedes Benz repair: R & R Engine Shut Off Box, vacuum unit, filter canister

Question
Hi,  We have just purchased a 1982 Mercedes 300D Turbo, and have enjoyed driving and working on it.  The engine was not shutting off after the ignition was turned off.  Local supply house suggested to remove and replace the Engine Shut-off Box.  It is stashed away in a tight spot.  I am having difficulty removing the adjacent Oil Filter Canister to gain the required access.  Also the warned about having the ESOB arm installed at the correct location to avoid the engine to be racing, and not idling!! Any other causes for this lack of the engine shutting down?

New ?:  The take off from a standing position is very sluggish, we have added Fuel Inj. cleaning agent, and have a clean air filter.  I was thinking that there was a problem with the linkage, what a bowl of spaghetti that system is !  I was also thinking to change the glow plugs, but it has a smooth running high... end speed that has no interruptions...             Thank You

Answer
Replace fuel filters, and check for fuel line leaks. RE: take off from a standing position is very sluggish.

Engine Shut-off is a small vacuum unit, not a box, do not touch it; unless you read http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/showthread.php3?p=824840#post824840
and are not afraid of wrecking engine.

My advice RE: Engine Shut-off:
Take it to the dealer, for your safety.

Change the glow plugs for better starting.
Glow plugs turn off after roughly ninty seconds, and do not come on again until the next time car is started.
