Mercedes Benz repair: 1982 380 SL, stainless steel systems, rear muffler

Question
Hi Tim:  Boy am I glad to have found this forum!  I have a lovely vehicle (1982 380 SL) I would like to keep for as long as I live.  It needs work here and there, and now I am trying to replace the rear muffler.  Well, I went under the car and found it impossible to remove it from the center section.  How do experts remove the rear muffler and then put back the new part?  Is there something that is used to seal/lube the point of attachment between the pipes of the rear muffler and the center muffler before tightening them together with the u-bolts?  HELP!!!!! Lastly, can I use you to pick your brain in the future, or can you recommend a resource, either on the internet or otherwise, where I can continue to learn how to slowly restore my auto?  Thanks so much for your time!

Sincerely,

Michael Duvert

Answer
It depends largely on what type of exhaust sytem you install. The old sytem needs to be cut off, because they are usually welded together. New systems can be bought in pieces and connected with U clamps. There is no sealant except on stainless steel systems. The best source for replacemet systems is Time Valve. They have a web sight.
