Mercedes Benz repair: 1980 240D engine problem, rod bearings, 240d mercedes

Question
I took my 1980 240D mercedes to the mechanic when it developed a clacking noise in the engine and then stalled out while I was driving.  I was told that my rod bearings are no good and they even gave me some bearing debris they pulled out.  I was told that all I can do is replace the engine (cost effectively).  Is it not possible just to replace the rod bearings?  They didn't mention anything about any other damage like to the crankshaft or something.  What would you suggest doing?

Answer
I would follow their edvice and replace the engine. Once the bearings go everything else goes with it. the crankshaft is damaged and the connecting rods are damged also. It is cheaper in the long run to get a short block. This should cost around $3,000.00. I think you can still get a long block for around $4500.00
