Mercedes Benz repair: 1987 560sel, spiral cable, cruise control

Question
You have been very helpful with your advice.  I am trying to get my car in descent condition and I have been severly misled with a lot of things about my car which cost me a lot of money.  I have two more questions.  My cruise control works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't.  When it does work it drops in the middle of the ride sometimes and sometimes it stays on.  Any ideas?  Also my sunroof does not open but it gets power it will go on the up position partially.  I though it was the motor at first.  But if it was the motor it would not move a little bit.  Do you have any suggestions?

Answer
The cruise control can be real pain to fix. It is best just to replace the unit itself. The unit is vacuum operated. The sunroof is easier. There is a spiral cable that need to be replaced. The motor is in the trunk and the cable connects to the motor then to the sunroof. It can take some time to replace but it will do the trick. Sometimes you can fix the problem by tightening the cable at the motor connection. Other times you can clean and lubricate the tracks of the sunroof. There is a manual release at the motor. It is a 19mm nut that you can turn with a socket to open the sunroof to clean the tracks and lubricate.
