MG Car Repair: Midget 1500 1979 speedo cable

Question
Speedo is playing up. -  the previous owner must have had a problem as there is tape wrapped around speedo end of cable. I need to replace cable but  instead of the expected knurled  nut there is a plastic clip with a little lever which looks like it presses in.  What is the technique for removal?  I should appreciate some advice before I do any damage!

Answer
Hi Paul.  I think the 1500 Midget uses a push-on speedo cable which has a nylon hook on it.  To remove the cable the hook must be raised clear of the metal ring that it hooks around.

You may be able to see a lever that you can press to raise the clip, but it is not always obvious, so just lift the hook with a small screwdriver.

I have also seen a speedo cable with a nylon ring.  This type has two ears.  If you squeeze the ring between thumb and finger (so the ring becomes oval), then the two ears spread out, after which the cable will pull off.

Either way, don't worry about breaking it.  You are going to fit a new one anyway.
