MG Car Repair: 74 MG electronic ignition, crank pulley, rotor arm

Question
hi Barrie - thanks for tips on the carb \ manifold troubleshooting problems. You mentioned to plug the gulp valve - am I trying to prevent air from entering the manifold so to increase suction to the carbs? Also am wondering if when I installed my new  electronic ignition, the timing may be off. What exactly is dynamic timing - in the Haynes manual it gives little on the electronic timing. Other than adjusting the crank pulley to TDC and aligning the rotor arm to point to #1, is that it?
thanks - June is almost here! P

Answer
Hi Paul.  At this stage, the purpose of the exercise is to get the engine running.  To do that, there must be no air leaks into the inlet manifold.

Once you have got the engine running, then you can set the timing more accurately using a stroboscope.  Unfortunately, with electronic ignition there is no way to set the timing statically.  You could try advancing the distributor a little, but timing is not critical for getting the engine started.
