MG Car Repair: 1978 MGB, spec car, winter project

I just purchased this car and I know it has some problems.
The car runs but when you turn off the ignition it will not shut off the engine unless the parking brake is completely off. It will start no matter where the parking brake is. I live in Ontario Canada so it is a winter project.

MGB diode 1976-80   Hi Jim.  On a 1978 Canadian spec car there is a diode in the brake warning circuit.  If this fails (and they do) then the engine will not shut off unless the handbrake is fully off.  You have to stop the car on the footbrake, switch the engine off and THEN apply the handbrake.  It is a pain.  

I attach a photo of a diode.  I think it is hidden behind the glovebox.
