MG Car Repair: Rear main seal leak, main bearings, rear seal

Question
Hello Brian. The rear main seal on my 1960 1600 MGA engine with age is leaking a bit worse than normal. Been hearing good things about White Shepherd oil Stop Leak. Thin enough in viscosity so not to plug oil galleries but flexes seals. Good for a short term fix till the next tear down? May not help but can it hurt?

Thanks in advance,
John

Answer
Hi John:
There is no rear seal - per se, on the MGA engine. Only a scroll-type arrangement. If the main bearings are wearing then some more leakage is to be expected. You can try the Shepherd Stop leak, or a thicker oil, like a 20-50w, however I do not expect that you will eliminate the leakage.  Good luck!
