MG Car Repair: MGB ignition switch doesnt start the car, starter solenoid, fuse box

Question
I have a 1979 MGB and while turning the key to start the engine nothing happens.  The accessories turn on, the annoying buzzer sounds like always but when you turn the key to start it, silence.  I've checked the battery and that is is good.  I've shorted the starter and if I catch it right it starts.  It appears to me it is something in the ignition switch or something between the switch and the starter.  Any ideas would be great so I don't have to crawl underneath the car to start it. Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Robert.  Before you start crawling underneath the car, it would be worth checking the starter relay.  They often fail.  The starter relay is a small round canister (usually black or blue) attached to the inner front wing just behind the main fuse box.  On a 79 MGB there will be two relays there, so look for the one that has two white wires with a red stripe.

Get someone to help you, then put your hand on the relay and get your helper to operate the starter using the ignition key.  If you can feel the relay clicking then the problem is probably a faulty starter solenoid.  If you CANNOT feel the relay clicking, then it just needs a new relay.  Any good auto shop should be able to supply you with a standard replacement relay for a few dollars.  Changing the solenoid on the starter motor is more complicated but I did one last week.  It took me over half an hour and I have a pit for easy access.
