MG Car Repair: 1959 MGA clutch, foot clutch, clutch fluid

Question
QUESTION: I can shift to all gears but when clutch pedal is released clutch does not engage. When engine is off and car is in gear, the car is moved easily.

ANSWER: Hi:  Time for a new clutch. But first, since it is a fluid operated system, have someone look under the car at the clutch slave cyl at the same time you are operating the foot clutch pedal. Should show about 1/4 inch of movement on the rod. Although it sounds as if your clutch is operating,,,just not engaging. I think it's worn out.
Hope this helps,
Brian

QUESTION: There is no movement of the slave cyl rod. It appears to be fully extended.

Answer
John -  The operating rod from the clutch slave cyl must move ( 1/4 to 3/8 ") with the operation of the clutch pedal. If it does not, then you have a problem with the clutch master cyl, or the slave cyl, or possibly the rubber hose that goes to the slave cyl(rarely). Check the clutch fluid level first. Even if you don't see leaking fluid the master cyl can leak internally. You might be able to get kits and rebuild them to working condition or you may need new parts (Moss Motors is a source).  Good luck!
