MG Car Repair: Camshaft replacement, valve rocker, valve gear

Question
Can I replace the camshaft of my 1978 MGB by removing the radiator, waterpump, etc. WITHOUT removing the engine block from the car??

Answer
Hi Tim:

I am not unfortunately 100% sure - but more like about 95%. Yes, I believe you can do it, but it is a lot of work as you have noted. In addition, you will need to remove the lifters, so this means removing the valve rocker gear, pushrods, and lifters (with a magnet- may have to also remove the side cover which would necessitate removing the carbs, I believe) before the camshaft will slide out the front. In essence, you have to gain access to the front of the engine, dismantle the front of the engine, (timing cover, timing gears, tensioner, timing chain) dismantle the valve gear and remove the lifters before you can withdraw the camshaft. Good luck
