MG Car Repair: fuel pump leak, fuel pump, fuel tank

Question
The fuel pump on my 1980 MGB runs but leaks.
I have tightened the screws that hold sections of the pump together, but leak persists.
If I install an aftermarket electronic pump, does the original fuel pump remain attached to the car?
If so, do I need to have a non-leaking original pump?
Please advise me.

Thank you

Answer
Hi Kenneth.  If the original pump leaks, then either the leak must be fixed or the pump must be replaced.

If you install an aftermarket electronic pump leaving the old leaky pump in place, then you will have other problems, depending where you mount it:

If you mount it nearer the fuel tank, then the output from the new pump will cause the old pump to leak.

If you mount it AFTER the original pump, then the new pump may just suck air through the old leaky pump.
