MG Car Repair: 1972, high tension wires, carb adjustments

Question
Car starts fine. Runs very well in top gears, at high rpm's. Problem is when down shifting and accelerating in first or second gear and at 1500 to 2200 rpm the engine runs rough and finally stops. Fuel pump?

Answer
I would check the distributor timing and ignition points first. Make sure the timing is correct and that the points are gap set properly, clean, and not burned.  Then check distributor wiring (low tension from the coil to dist, and high tension wires from the distributor to the 4 spark plugs) Then check the spark plugs - see if they are fouling and for proper gap, etc.,
Then move on to other things, such as valve rocker clearances. Unless someone has messed with the carbs - they would be the last thing I'd check, because everything else has to be right before any carb adjustments could be considered.

Also, generally if it's running well in top gears with higher rpms, then that indicates to me that the fuel pump is pumping well enough (since it is keeping up with the higher demands at the higher speeds).

Hope this is of some help.
