MG Car Repair: alternator, mgb, pulley

Question
Hi my question is about my alternator that I installed on my 1966 mgb. The alternating fan is making some contact with the adjusting link underneath the alternator. Would filing part of the adjusting link do any damage?

Answer
Hi Layton

No, depending on how much you'd have to remove, I don't think a small bit of filing would do any harm or lessen the strength of the bracket/mounting link. Having said that I would probably try to find out why the alt fan is contacting the link. Is the fan bent? Is the link too long? Is the adjusting link bent?

You could try spacing the alternator away from the link with a washer or two, as long as you don't get the pulley too much out of line with the others the belt won't have a problem. I'm talking here about 3/32" max.

Good luck and let me know how it turns out.  Thanks for the question.
