MG Car Repair: MG TD TF Gearbox jumps out of gear, rubber bushes, external checks

Question
My MGTD jumps out of 2nd gear under acceleration. What could the reason be and what is the fix? Thank you kindly.

Answer
Hi Vic.  There are several reasons why this can happen.  Before you start stripping the gearbox, do a few external checks first.  It would also be helpful if I knew what state the car was in.  Is it recently restored, in good condition, or has it been around for many years without much attention?

1) Have you ever replaced the two rubber blocks that the gearbox sits on?  These can go soft and allow the gearbox to move too much, knocking the gear lever out of gear especially 2nd gear.

2) Check out the front engine mounting rubber.  It also goes soft and can even separate from the metal plate.  Place a plank of timber under the engine sump (oil pan) and lift the engine gently with a jack.  Is the front mount OK?

3) At the side of the engine there is a stabilizer bar attached to a bracket underneath the water pump.  This is adjustable for length and should be just the right length with virtually no sideways movement.  Sometimes the rubber bushes can perish or even disappear.  Also, the bracket under the water pump can fracture.  If you need new bushes, they are the same as those used on a skate board.

If all the above check out OK, get back to me for more suggestions.
