MG Car Repair: bringing out of storage, mgb tourer, zenith carb

Question
Hi
I have a 1975 MGB tourer/roadster(USA model, single Zenith carb,1800)and am attempting to get it running again regularly after about two years in storage. I have fired it up during the last two summers but haven't had it properly serviced since my mechanic hung up his spanners!I had it running today and it's not happy;backfiring mainly and certainly not able to idle.I'm sure there are numerous other issues to address too! The question is, where to start with the maintenance as there are very few mechanics knowledgeable in British cars in this city.Your thoughts?
Thanks.

Answer
Hi Alison.  From what you have told me it sounds like the fuel (petrol, gasoline) has gone stale after sitting in the tank for 2 years.  I would syphon all the old fuel from the tank and then put say 2 gallons of fresh fuel in.  It may be difficult to start until the new fuel gets through the pipes but it should clear within a couple of minutes.

As regards maintenance, it isn't that difficult.  Buy a Haynes manual for the MGB and have a read through the first chapter.  I am always here on the other end of the internet if you have a problem.
