MG Car Repair: Leaning to the right MGB, 6 volt batteries, nylon spacers

Question
Hi Barrie, sorry to be a nuisance but I have another long term mystery you may be able to resolve. My 65 B Roadster (212 000 miles) started listing to starboard a while back. Traced it to be broken main blade on right rear spring. Replaced both rear springs (ex MGOC UK). Ride height greatly improved but still leaning to the right. Replaced right front coil spring(ex MGOC UK) - when took old one out it was same length as new one - replaced it anyway. No noticeable improvement. Thought that new rear springs had settled unevenly owing to using car with driver only. Placed 50kg bag of cement in left hand corner of boot to assist lh spring to settle. After 3 months a little improvement but difference between ground to top of front wheel arches left and right still remains about 1" (25mm). Next step to swop rear springs and then to possibly shim front spring in spring pan (reluctant to do that). Before I do all that, do you have any pearls of wisdom ? Have read in various sources that quality of new rear springs are pretty but have no choice really. Many tks.

Answer
Hi Charles.  I like the bag of cement idea.  I have used paving slabs in the past.  After 3 months it is worth swapping the rear springs over.  Check the front wing-to-tyre gaps are the same, then check the back ones.  Keep a record of the gaps for future reference.

Check that you have a pair of matching front springs.  They should be the same length off the car, AND the wire of the springs should be the same thickness, AND they should have the same number of turns.  You can test the thickness on the car with a 9/16 open-ended wrench.  Nylon spacers are available to make fine adjustment to the ride height.

Personally, I think the MGB rides too high as standard, so I always use (competition) C-AHT20 front springs and C-AHT21 rear springs.  Also, next time your 6 volt batteries die, replace them with a single 12 volt battery fitted on the passenger's side.

A final thought, check that both drop links are the same length on the front anti-roll bar.  They made two different lengths.
