MG Car Repair: Speedometer & others!, turn signal switch, speedometer needle

Question
QUESTION: My 1970 MGB's speedometer is not stable at speeds below 40miles p.h.-can anything be done about it?
Is it posible to fit a stabilising device to the oil presure meter-also very unstable.
The direction indicator does not return-is something available
to sort this? I have contacted Moss Motors-they could not assist.
Regards

ANSWER: Hi Anton,

You are talking about three different problems. If the speedometer needle is jumping at a steady rate it is most likely a kinked inner cable or a dry cable. If it is not steady check the tightness of the cable on the speedo.

Oil pressure can sometimes fluctuate some at low RPM when thin oil is used and the oil is hot due to the oil holes in the crank etc lining up with an oil supply hole. But if you have low pressure and proper weight oil 10w x 40 or 10w x 30 and it does it cold, you may have a bearing problem.

As for the turn signal arm canceling you need to remove the plastic shell and look at it to see that the small, either plastic of metal lever that contacts the nub on the steering shaft is not broken. If so you will need to purchase a new turn signal switch as the small parts that do the contacting and canceling are not available (at least that I could find)

QUESTION: Thank you for your answers-I will follow up. Could you possibly give me a reference for obtaining the turn switch?
Kind regards,
Anton de Kock

Answer
Most of the MG parts suppliers have them but don't purchase one until you confirm that is what is broken. With the plastic cover off you can watch the cancel mechanism operate and thus see what is broken and possibly repair it.

If you need one you should be able to get one from either Engel Imports, Moss Motors, The Roadster Factory, Victoria British or British Parts North West.

Google each on the Internet for contact information. There are others but these are the ones I have bought from and I know they are reputable companies.
