MG Car Repair: 1979 MG Midget wiring, time howard, test light

Question
Oh what fun, lost the whole harness, replaced as best I could as it does not match exactly just somewhat, engine starts but will stay started and I am not sure where I should be looking. I am sure its electrical but I am not enough of a mechanic to know what to look for. All was well before the harness burnt up.  Thank you Dave

Answer
Hi Dave,

I learned a long time ago not to attempt to work on an electrical system without a wiring diagram in front of me. You said ",engine starts but will stay started" did you mean "not stay running" ?

Will it keep running as long as you have the key in the "Start" position? Or does it just start and stop no matter what you do with the key?

Replacement harness are often different then what is on the car for many reasons but with a diagram you can usually sort out the problems as long as you follow a rule I use. Only trace ONE circuit at a time.

If you don't have a diagram, let me know and I will post one on my web site for you to copy.

All you need is a diagram, a 12v test light, and a plan (one circuit at a time).
