MG Car Repair: Rear Hub, rear axle seal, shaft collar

Question
QUESTION: I apparently have a leaking rear axle seal on my 1970 MGB (everything inside the drum is coated with oil).  I've removed the axle nut but can't pull the hub off.  Is the axle shaft collar threaded also?  I've owned the car for 40 years, but obviously I've been into this part of it!

Thanks for your help.

ANSWER: Hi John,

No, the hub is splined and can be tight in some cases so you may need a puller. There is a small cone spacer but it is not usually a problem so just put a puller on the hub and pull it off. You will then need to remove the backing plate and bearing/seal retainer to replace the seal. You should check the bearing for play because a worn bearing is usually what knocks out a seal.

QUESTION: Howard, thank you for your advice, the hub came off without any problem.
Now I'm on the other rear wheel replacing the brake shoes and wheel cylinder and I can't seem to get the clip on the new wheel cylinder! Is there a particular technique to placing this clip?  Does it slide on or snap onto the wheel cylinder (convex side up or down)?  Is there a special tool required?

Thanks again for your help.

Answer
Hi John,

As I remember you first need to check the thickness of the "C" clip in the groove to see that you have the correct parts, then put the cylinder into the backing plate so the bleeder valve is on top. then start the "C" (or "E" clip as some are called)clip in the groove and I usually used an old flat blade screwdriver against the middle of the clip and drove it onto the cylinder with a hammer. Sometimes it helped to have a friend hold the cylinder tight into the backing plate. (also the use of special curse words helps if you are so inclined) Several British cars hold their wheel cylinders on that way. (not to my liking) I like things that bolt together. Some use a "U" shaped spring clip but the same goes for it too.
