MG Car Repair: Electronic Ignition, positive earth, vacuum unit

Question
Hi Barrie,

As a (very) novice MGB GT (1969) owner I'm having the car bodywork restored professionally later this year but in the meantime I'd like to check / overhaul some of the engine ancillaries etc, partly as a way of learning and being involved myself. The car is still a runner so I can make use of it pending the bodywork being done.

One thing I'm considering is installing electronic ignition. The chap who will be doing the bodywork has recommended the 123 system which I know you mention in 'Barrie's Notes'. You also mention that if the distributor is okay then a Pertronix Ingitor system. Not sure what condition to describe my distributor as but it appears to be a 25D4 so presumably quite old.

Any thoughts on the best option please? The 123 is fairly expensive compared to the Pertronix but I 've also heard that the much cheaper Accuspark is a good alternative? Thanks

Gary

Answer
Hi Gary.
I fitted an Accuspark kit to a V8 two weeks ago, and I was very impressed with it.  These units would appear to be excellent value for money.

Before you purchase one, check the polarity of your car, because they do not make a positive earth version and early MGBs were positive earth.

I would also remove the distributor to check for wear in the shaft and bushes.  So long as it is ok and the vacuum unit still works, then go a head and fit an Accuspark unit.
