MG Car Repair: pinon gear, pinion gear, drive train

Question
i have a 1953 mgtd .  total restoration done 5 yrs ago i think i may have a problem with my pinion gear.  do you have any idea how much it would cost to repair   from low to high thank yoy pete

Answer
Hi Pete,

How did you decide that the pinion gear was bad? Either way, if someone needs to replace a pinion gear the whole differential needs to be gone through. I don't have a flat rate on the TD but most all differentials are about 10 hours at what ever the shop's hourly rate is.

If the shop's estimate is too high you might look into buying a good used MGB complete rear end and use that. I don't remember all the details but in one shop I worked in, we put a complete drive train from a MGB into a TD and as I remember there was not a lot of fabrication necessary.
